当今叶腊石提高其应用价值的有效方法是非金属矿物的超细粉碎和表面改性。叶腊石矿物材料加工成超细粉体时，比表面积大，表面活性高，烧结温度低，作为复合材料补强性能好，可应用于多孔陶瓷、电缆线、塑料、橡胶工业中作填料等。
由于叶腊石矿物材料与有机高聚物的界面性质不同，相容性差，因而难以在基质中均匀分散， 直接或过多的填充往往容易导致材料某些力学性质下降及脆性化的缺点。因此，除了粒度和粒度分布的要求之外，还必须对叶腊石矿物材料表面进行改性，以改善其表面的物理、化学特性，增强其与有机高聚物或树脂的相容性，提高其在有机物基质中的分散，以提高材料的机械强度及综合性能。
